What happens to my recyclables?

Where your recycling is processed, how it is handled, and what it can be turned into all depend on the material! Each commodity (plastics, metals, paper, etc) each have their own industry standards, and support our state’s economy in their own way.

Why should I recycle?

  • Conserves limited natural resources, saving energy & water, and reduces pollution and litter.
  • Supports the circular economy contributing over $17 billion into the state’s economy.
  • Provides more than 72,500 industry jobs, supporting the livelihood of our family, friends, and community.

Household Hazardous Waste collection is available through the county. Check out their website to learn what items are accepted, when and where collections will take place.

For information on specific materials and how to handle them, EGLE has more information available on their website.

How can I support the recycling industry?

The best way to support the industry is by recycling properly! Even small steps all add up, especially when each of us is contributing. Learn about recycling in your area and get started today!

Another great way to support the industry is by purchasing products made from recycled material. You probably already are without even realizing it! Lots of glass, metal, paper, and plastic packaging have recycled content in them such as beverage containers, laundry detergent bottles, and cardboard boxes.
